RESEARCH: Helping growers optimize irrigation
New technology developed at UC Davis and now available commercially (as LeafMon) helps growers find the sweet spot for irrigation: just enough water at just the right time. Professor Shrinivasa Upadhyaya and his team designed a suite of sensors that attaches to a leaf and sends real-time data on temperature (of the leaf and the air around the leaf), light, wind speed and relative humidity, to guard against plant stress. Favorable outlook for wine industry, with some concerns
Wine industry executives and professionals, answering Professor Robert Smiley's annual surveys, forecast a continued split in sales above and below the $10-a-bottle price point, growing overall consumption and more emphasis on premium wines. Running star Sarah Sumpter succumbs to cancer at 25
Six months after having surgery for a brain tumor, she returned to track and cross country, and went on to become an All-American and Big West Conference Athlete of the Year. Drew Wartenbeurg, who coached her, says: "She wanted to be seen as a runner and an athlete, not a cancer-surviving runner and athlete.
