 New public art x 2UC Davis and the city of Davis are giving people two new ways to see the world, what it's made of — including iron, in the form of used shovel heads! Look for the Elements of Life in the Rock Hall Plaza, and a vine-inspired sculpture at the east end of the arboretum. Nancy Lane and Jonna Mazet elected to Institute of Medicine

ChemWiki takes on costly textbooks
The hefty college textbook, weighty in both pounds and dollars, has long been a staple of student life. But UC Davis chemistry professor Delmar Larsen is on a mission to replace textbooks with an online, open e-textbook network. Larsen's ChemWiki, launched in 2008 on a shoestring budget, now nets more than 2 million visitors a month, making it the most visited domain among the university's websites. [ More… ]
