UC Davis researchers are investigating genetics and other traits that may give some corals an edge over others as climate change causes oceans to warm. Their work has brought them to the South Pacific, where they have established a coral nursery.

A day after performing pieces by composers hailing from around the world, Brightwork NewMusic will debut several pieces by UC Davis graduate student composers. (Jan. 30, free)
The San Francisco Chronicle explores the life of Maria Manetti Shrem and how she became a major philanthropist in the region, lending support to projects like the Maria Manetti Shrem Institute for Sustainable Design, Fashion and Textiles. “The museum, the school, the opera, education … that is my legacy,” she says.
