Testing Astronaut Health in Bursts of Weightlessness
Rich Whittle, assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, was part of an international team in France that observed how microgravity — created by 30-second airplane dives — affects blood flow; they tested a potential countermeasure to protect astronauts during spaceflight.
Joanna Regulska, vice provost and dean of Global Affairs, will retire Nov. 1 from the position she has held since joining UC Davis in 2015. Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Mary Croughan called her “a visionary leader whose work has transformed how UC Davis engages with the world.”
Researchers have identified the genetic mechanism behind the daily rhythm that determines whether avocado flowers function as males by releasing pollen or as females by receiving pollen — a process that has long been observed but unclear.
New Record for First-Year Offers of Admission: 48,000
UC Davis extended offers of admission for first-year study to 4.5% more applicants this year, after receiving more than 122,000 applications. UC Davis expects to enroll about 6,300 new first-year students this fall, with 73% coming from California.
