His passions included publishing, winemaking, collecting art, and philanthropy, where he and his wife, Maria Manetti Shrem, built a longstanding partnership with UC Davis to support arts, art history and design programs.

Chancellor Gets Hands-on With Grapes, Wine Research
Students, faculty and staff in viticulture and enology got a visit from Chancellor Gary S. May, who sampled both tough labor and wine as he learned about research at one of the most sustainable wineries in the world.
The renovation and expansion of the Arboretum Waterway is not yet complete, but water is slowly being reintroduced to avoid erosion, which could happen if water were allowed to rush in suddenly.
Open Enrollment — The period to make changes begins Thursday (Oct. 31) and ends Nov. 22.
Report vaccination status — The deadline for all students and employees to get a flu shot or opt out is Nov. 1. The policy continues to require COVID-19 vaccination. This year, employees will report their statuses of both vaccinations in a new portal through Occupational Health.
Global grants and awards — The application periods are open for separate grants and awards with varying deadlines: Seed Grants for International Activities (Deadline: Dec. 13), Grants for Advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (Deadline: Jan. 8), Excellence in Teaching for Global Learning Awards (Deadline: Jan. 12) and Chancellor’s Awards for International Engagement (Deadline: Jan. 15).
