Engineering Center Opens
|
The greatly expanded student design shop on the north side of Bainer Hall is named after Diane Bryant ’85, who contributed $6.5 million to the project. It features more space, more machinery and is now home to the Student Startup Center, ensuring Aggies from all disciplines — not just engineering majors — can take advantage of it.

$8M for Biological Sciences
|
Gift from life sciences industry expert Deborah Neff ’76 will be used to establish two endowments, one for the college’s deanship and the other for the Center for Neuroscience for research into Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Neff received a lab coat and safety glasses during a UC Davis Foundation Board luncheon last week.

Elected to Sciences Academy
|
Professor Andreas Bäumler, a microbiologist, and Professors Luca Comai and Venkatesan Sundaresan, plant biologists, have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences — considered one of the highest honors a scientist can achieve. Members are elected in recognition of their contributions to original research. Read what our three new members have achieved.

Take a Break for Food, Fun!
|
Thank Goodness for Staff festivities are tonight (May 9) for alternate-shift workers (who will gather at UC Davis Health Stadium) and Wednesday (May 10) for most employees (gathering on Russell Field). Food trucks are rolling in for both events. Check out Staff Assembly’s TGFS webpage for information on transportation and parking, meals, field games and more. Then go and enjoy!

Parking enforcement — Transportation Services announced the resumption of normal enforcement hours, 7 a.m.-10 p.m., starting today (May 9).

Safe Rides — Extended hours will continue through the end of the quarter, at least, 8 p.m.-3 a.m. for on-campus pickup, going to any location in the city of Davis, seven days a week. On-campus rides start at 5 p.m. daily. Call 530-754-COPS (2677) or use the TransLoc app. Rides are free and available to all faculty, staff and students.

Executive recruitment: Dean-School of Education — A virtual forum with Candidate C will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday (May 16) to hear the candidate’s qualifications and vision for the school.

Safety Month — Week 2: The May 9 ice cream social has been canceled; it was to have been an introductory event for our new health and safety teams. Week 3: Trainings for outdoors work (heat illness prevention, May 16; wildfire smoke, May 17; and field work planning and preparation, May 18).

Information Security Symposium — Registration is open for the 2023 edition of this biennial program hosted by Information and Educational Technology. The theme for this year’s symposium, to be held virtually, June 20-21, is “Evolve,” recognizing the increased need for security in an ever-changing world.
