Our newest fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest general scientific society, are Danika L. Bannasch, Annaliese Franz, Sarah B. Hrdy, Lynne A. Isbell, Pamela J. Lein, Maeli Melotto, Roberta L. Millstein and Frank E. Osterloh, honored for their achievements in veterinary medicine, anthropology, plant sciences, chemistry and philosophy.

Impacts of Disruptive Speech
|
“Dialogues Across Difference,” a new climate and retention initiative from the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, asks faculty and other instructors to share their experiences with disruptive speech in the class and lab and in the field, for researchers’ use in preparing tools that instructors can use to maintain a productive learning environment.

Riding the New Electrics
|
What’s it like to ride one of Unitrans’ new all-electric buses? Shelby Dioum, an intern for UC Davis Magazine, took a spin one recent morning and tried to find all of the ways the big, red (and now more green than ever) buses are unique. “I know the environmental impact will be great,” she writes, noting lots of similarities with the rest of the fleet.

Don Roth to Retire From MC
|
Soon after the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts wraps up its 2022-23 season, Don Roth will take his final bow as its executive director. He will retire Aug. 31 after having led the show since 2006. And, before he goes, he’s helping to put the finishing touches on next year’s lineup — surely as stellar as ever.

AggieSurplus — “I ♥ Furniture Sale” will be held during February’s in-person shopping days: 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday and Friday (Feb. 2 and 3). All furniture and other select items are only $5, those two days only. Open to everyone, including the general public.

Chancellor’s Innovator of the Year award — Call for nominations of individual UC Davis faculty or staff members, or teams that may include UC Davis faculty, students and staff. Open to all academic disciplines. Deadline: March 15.

Writing Across the Curriculum Seminar and Workshop — The University Writing Program invites interested faculty and other instructors, including teaching assistants, to indicate the date or dates (March 2 and-or March 3) and times when they could attend this conference, whether they would attend in person or via Zoom, and topics they would like to see addressed.

Grants for projects in support of our community’s health and well-being — Funding is offered by Healthy UC Davis (application deadline Feb. 17) and the Student Equity in Mental Health Programming Fund (applications accepted any time).

With nearly 900 sign-ups so far, I guess you could say kindness is catching! The Kindness Counts Challenge will deliver weekly emails to support you in developing a kindness practice that can fit into a busy schedule — in as little as five to 10 minutes a day. Each email will offer guidance for that week’s loving kindness meditation, along with a variety of theme-based acts of kindness to practice during the week. This is a free program from the Staff and Faculty Well-Being Program. (Feb. 6-March 3)
The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion has compiled a list of events in February, including “The ‘Reckoning’ in American Art History and Art Museums” (panel, Feb. 9) and “Black Excellence Panel: Believing in Your Journey” (Feb. 23).
Yoga sessions are held twice weekly, while Pilates, Bootcamp and Strength sessions are held once a week through March 16. Free and open to all students, staff, academics and retirees.
UCLA Professor Kelly Lytle Hernández discusses her book Bad Mexicans: Race, Empire and Revolution in the Borderlands. (Feb. 1, livestream only)
Graduate students present 12 short films they produced themselves, showing their ecological research in the field. The films emerged from a fall course on “Scientific Filmmaking.” (Feb. 1, free)
Taller Arte del Nuevo Amanecer, or TANA, invites students and other community members to this introduction to the silkscreen process, and also including some of the history of printmaking as it relates to the Chicano Movement. (Feb. 2, free; sign-ups will be taken for winter classes, also free)
Discussion and support: Coping With Grief, Loss and Change (Feb. 8 and 22), and Cultivating Hope and Optimism (Feb. 22), all remote.
