The ‘Wrong Kind of Fire’
|
High-severity wildfire is increasing in Sierra Nevada and Southern Cascade forests and has been burning at unprecedented rates compared to the years before Euro-American settlement, according to a study from the Safford Lab and its collaborators. Those rates have especially shot up over the past decade.

Students’ Ecology Film Fest
|
Twelve graduate students did double duty last summer as researchers and filmmakers, capturing their work in the field for their course in “Scientific Filmmaking.” They've each produced a short film, and the public is invited to a free showing Wednesday, Feb. 1, at the Davis Veterans Memorial Center Theatre.

Museum’s Winter Opening
|
The Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art’s Winter Season Opening will be this Sunday (Jan. 29), free and open to the public, and featuring the debut of Professor Emeritus Mike Henderson’s first solo U.S. museum exhibition in 20 years. Be there at 3:30 p.m. for his conversation with Chancellor May.

Campus Safety Lighting Walk — Today (Jan. 24): Students, staff, faculty and other members of the community are invited to meet at the Memorial Union flagpole at 5 p.m. for a fun-filled evening of free swag and a walk around the campus to check for exterior lighting that is not working or is obstructed. Do you need volunteer hours? This event will count!

Using historical photographs and rare items in the UC Davis Library Archives and Special Collections, this exhibit explores the history, purpose and meaning of our two towers — that’s right, two — and their predecessors for over a century.
