COVID-19’s ‘Kraken’ Variant
|
Officially known as XBB.1.5 and considered the COVID-19 pandemic’s most contagious variant so far, it grew quickly in December, from about 1% of cases nationwide to 43% as of Jan. 13. Natascha Tuznik, associate clinical professor of infectious diseases at UC Davis Health, explains what you need to know about the variant, including symptoms and vaccine efficacy.

New from the UC Davis Library: The AggieOpen Fellows Pilot Program invites proposals from teaching faculty and instructors for awards of $2,000 to $7,500 to help in the adoption or adaptation of open educational resources (openly licensed and freely accessible) for undergraduate courses, as an alternative to traditional, commercially published textbooks.

Buzz Killer: Caffeine Pollutes
|
UC Davis environmental science writer Kat Kerlin loves coffee. So it hurts her to report caffeine is an emerging global pollutant. In her blog, she says there are things you can do to reduce the pollution, and there are things scientists are doing — people like UC Davis graduate student Gabriel Subuyuj, who is studying bacteria that can grow on caffeine and break it down.

Cats on Video! For Vet Visits
|
Life turned remote during the COVID-19 pandemic. People worked, learned to cook, chatted with loved ones and completed countless other tasks via video. Some cats even visited the virtual veterinarian as part of a UC Davis project to evaluate if telemedicine could increase access to care for an estimated 45.3 million feline-friendly households in the United States.

Campus Safety Lighting Walk — Students, staff, faculty and other members of the community are invited to meet at the Memorial Union flagpole, 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, for a fun-filled evening of free swag and a walk around the campus to check for exterior lighting that is not working or is obstructed. Do you need volunteer hours? This event will count!

Aggie Enterprise Town Hall — Employees who have budget, finance or purchasing responsibilities are the intended audience, but all are welcome. Advance registration required. FOA Vice Chancellor Clare Shinnerl recently announced a project timeline extension of six months, setting a new go-live date of January 2024. Questions can be submitted in advance as part of the registration form. 1-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, remote.

Grants for projects in support of our community’s health and well-being — Funding is available from Healthy UC Davis (deadline Feb. 17) and the Student Equity in Mental Health Programming Fund (applications accepted any time). Information session for both grant programs will be held Jan. 26.

Submit questions for systemwide UC Town Hall — All staff are invited to submit questions through Jan. 31, for the online town hall with President Drake, to be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24.

The UC Davis Design Museum takes a bold step with the exhibition “From Concept to Creation: Inspired Shoe Design by Chris Francis,” which showcases the colorful and imaginative footwear created by the Los Angeles-based shoe designer.
