Recent weather challenges have “created real challenges and impacted many of us significantly,” Chancellor Gary S. May says in a winter quarter greeting to the campus today. Nevertheless, we have many reasons to be positive about the year ahead: the recent labor action is behind us (thank you for your patience), and we have milestones and Aggie traditions to celebrate.

King Hall Honors Namesake
|
The public is invited to the law school’s fourth annual MLK Day of Service and Celebration, Monday (Jan. 16), a free event honoring Martin Luther King Jr. on his holiday. Service opportunities include donating supplies to the new Malcolm X Academy in Sacramento. A luncheon program (to be livestreamed) will celebrate the King Hall-MLK connection. Please RSVP.

Win Prizes for Budget IDEA$
|
We’re giving you an early look at some of the nearly 400 ideas submitted by staff and faculty to the IDEA$ at Work campaign, asking for suggestions on how the university could save money or generate revenue. If you haven’t turned in your ideas yet, remember Jan. 31 is the deadline for a prize drawing. The campaign will continue after the drawing, so please keep those ideas coming.

Library Leads Project LEND
|
LEND stands for Library Expansion of Networked Delivery, referring to a new UC-wide study into the potential for expanded lawful use of digitized books held by academic and research libraries. UC Davis’ Rice Majors, associate university librarian, and a leadership team are managing the project, recipient of $1.1 million in funding from the Mellon Foundation.

Unitrans winter quarter service — The driver shortage has eased at the campus-city bus system, allowing it to run its E, F and L lines every 30 minutes (instead of every hour) for the first time since March 2020. See the complete announcement for more information on winter quarter service.

“Transitioning to Retirement” — The Retiree Center presents this four-part series on Zoom on consecutive Fridays, Jan. 13-Feb. 3, with separate tracks for staff and academics/faculty/physicians.

Call for nominations for the 2023 Diversity and Principles of Community Achievement Awards — Presented during the annual Soaring to New Heights celebration, these awards recognize employees who — as individuals or as part of a team — demonstrate diversity and the upholding of the Principles of Community, in ways that exceed the expectations of their positions. Deadline: Jan. 16.

Campus Safety Lighting Walk — Students, staff, faculty and other members of the community are invited to meet at the Memorial Union flagpole, 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, for a fun-filled evening of free swag and a walk around the campus to check for exterior lighting that is not working or is obstructed. Do you need volunteer hours? This event will count!

Aggie Enterprise Town Hall — Employees who have budget, finance or purchasing responsibilities are the intended audience, but all are welcome. Advance registration required. FOA Vice Chancellor Clare Shinnerl recently announced a project timeline extension of six months, setting a new go-live date of January 2024. Questions can be submitted in advance as part of the registration form. 1-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, remote.
