Momentous Picnic Day
|
Campus welcomed tens of thousands of people last Saturday for our 109th Picnic Day, “Ignite the Moment,” a glimpse into our day-to-day work in the sciences, social sciences, humanities and arts, with a healthy dose of fun thrown in. Students, staff and faculty all pitched in, organizing exhibits and greeting visitors, handing out goodies, and putting our best feet forward.

One ‘Audacious’ Project
|
UC Davis scientists are teaming up with UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco researchers on a $70-million donor-funded initiative that aims in part to cut climate change-causing emissions from cattle by using the genome-editing tool CRISPR on microbes in the cow gut. Funding is from TED’s Audacious Project, which encourages the world’s greatest changemakers to dream bigger.

Fasting for Ramadan
|
At the invitation of the co-hosts, the Arab Student Union and campus police, Dateline’s Cody Kitaura attended an iftar, or meal that ends a day of fasting during the holy month of Ramadan. More than 100 Muslims and non-Muslims came together to build community, educate and give back. Kitaura, a non-Muslim, fasted for the day to capture the experience of Muslims on campus.

Colloquium With Cartoonist
|
The next guest in Chancellor Gary S. May’s colloquium series is Barbara Brandon-Croft, the first Black woman to have a nationally syndicated newspaper comic strip. She’ll visit campus May 2 to discuss her series and new book, both titled Where I’m Coming From. The comic featured Black women having frank and funny discussions on a wide range of topics, and ran from 1989 to 2005.

Sustainability Champion Awards — Call for nominations of environmental leaders on campus — students, staff and faculty/academic staff — who exemplify why UC Davis continues to lead the way in sustainability efforts. Deadline: May 7.

Sustainability Culture Survey — Staff, faculty and students who complete the survey by May 12 will be entered into a drawing with four $125 Davis Co-op gift cards as prizes.

E-waste drop-off — AggieSurplus will accept nonfunctioning, university owned desktop (or smaller) electronics, for proper disposal, free of charge. 10 a.m.-noon Thursday, April 20, Hopkins Services Complex.

Blood drive — 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, April 26-28, bloodmobiles on the Quad. Appointments are encouraged and can be arranged online (click on “Blood drive” for the links) or by calling 877-258-4825.

- Take Our Children to Work Day — Thursday, April 27. For RSVP events, you must register by noon this Friday (April 21) to be entered in a lottery for limited spaces. Other events do not require RSVPs, and registration for those is open until Wednesday, April 26.
- Summer Camps — Registration for UC Davis affiliates (current staff, faculty and students) starts Monday (April 24). Open registration for the general community starts April 27.
$10 tickets for staff and faculty (limit two per person) for shows at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. Click on the program title to buy tickets; promo codes are preloaded.

The Staff and Faculty Health and Well-Being Program is launching another virtual physical activity challenge, this time taking you through “Botanical Gardens of the USA,” including the Arboretum and Public Garden. Starts Tuesday (April 25) and continues through May 26.
