UC, Wiley Expand Agreement
|
The University of California today announced an expansion of the university’s open-access agreement with Wiley, one of the world’s largest publishers. Under the deal, researchers at Davis and five other UC locations will receive additional funding support to publish open access, making significantly more UC research freely available to people around the world.

Lake’s Best Clarity Since ’80s
|
For the last five months of 2022, Lake Tahoe was the clearest it has been since the 1980s. That is due in part to a resurgence of the lake’s native zooplankton. They’ve provided a natural clean-up crew to help restore the lake’s famous blue waters. The findings are reported in the “Lake Tahoe Clarity Report 2022,” released today.

Grandma Talk Tops Grad Slam
|
Ten students condensed years of research into three minutes (and one PowerPoint slide) at last week’s UC Davis Grad Slam, with Ph.D. candidate Julia Mouat coming out on top with her talk on whether women’s smoking during pregnancy raises the risk of autism in their grandchildren. She now faces grad students from other campuses May 5.

First-Year Aggie Connections — Faculty, staff and graduate students are invited to serve as facilitators for groups of 25 or fewer freshman and transfer students during fall quarter. Each of these “connections” has a theme developed by the facilitator. Information session April 12 and proposal co-working session April 18 (both remote). Proposal deadline: April 28.

New policy, new training on abusive conduct in the workplace — All employees are due to receive notification Monday (April 17) of a new, 20-minute training on how to identify, report and prevent abusive conduct in the workplace, to be completed within 90 days.
|
Russell Boulevard bike lane and sidewalk closure — South side of Russell between Arthur Street and Orchard Park Drive (adjacent to the Orchard Park apartments construction site), closed for repairs, April 24 to June 26. Detour via the bike path that crosses Highway 113 south of Russell.

Executive recruitment: Vice Chancellor-Research — Call for applications and nominations. A remote listening session will be held Wednesday (April 12) to hear faculty, staff and students share their views on the qualities the next Vice Chancellor for Research should possess.

UC Retirement System Advisory Board — Call for applications from staff members interested in running for either of two open seats to be contested in an online election, May 22-June 16. Application deadline: May 1.

UC Davis Retirement Help Desks — Are you contemplating retirement within the next four to 12 months? If so, you can get your retirement questions answered locally, during drop-in Zoom sessions scheduled on various days at various times through June 28.

- “Notes on Hope” — J’Nai Bridges, mezzo-soprano, and Ulysses Owens Jr., percussion, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 30. Deal tickets available through April 29.
- Theatre Heroes: “Call of the Wild” — A multimedia adventure mixing the classic storytelling of Jack London with projected illustrations, 2 p.m. Sunday, May 7. Deal tickets available April 17-May 6.
Everyone who registers by noon Friday, April 21, will be entered into a lottery to choose the limited number of people who can sign up for the day’s RSVP events, one per person. Other events do not require RSVPs, and registration for those will remain open until April 26.
