|
The assistant professors are the beneficiaries of a 15-year-old program aimed at solving the conundrum of early-career funding — that is, it can be difficult to secure because their research is not far enough along. Hellman Fellowships help them bridge the gap while they advance their work to make it viable for external funding.

Summer of Soul Colloquium
|
KDVS alumnus Joseph Patel ’94, winner of an Academy Award and a Grammy this year for the documentary about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, will return to campus as the guest for the first Chancellor’s Colloquium of the new academic year, Thursday, Nov. 3. Free tickets are being distributed, and you will need one to get in.

Secrets of the Universe, Here!

The film showcasing the role UC Davis researchers (including students) played at CERN, searching for answers about the moments after the creation of the universe, will have its on-campus premiere next week. Free tickets for the showing at the Mondavi Center — which will include a Q&A with stars of the film — are available now.

Start checking your mailbox at home — UC headquarters is sending out our 2023 open enrollment packets Wednesday through Friday (Oct. 18-20). And be sure to consult the UC Davis open enrollment website to see the special, subsidized premiums for the UC Blue & Gold medical plan, which provides access to UC Davis Health.

Police Accountability Board fall public meeting — Quarterly meeting, in office-hours format, Wednesday, Oct. 19, remote.

Flu shots — All employees must receive a flu vaccination or formally opt out by Dec. 1. Shots are available from your health care provider, county clinics and many pharmacies, and at on-campus clinics (two more are scheduled: Oct. 19 and 27).

General election, Tuesday, Nov. 8 — Ballots went out by mail Monday (Oct. 10) and can be returned up until 8 p.m. Election Day in the official Yolo County drop box outside Hunt Hall, available 24 hours a day. Voter registration deadline: Oct. 24.

Blood drive — 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, Nov. 8-10, bloodmobiles on the Quad. Appointments are encouraged and can be arranged online or by calling 877-258-4825.

The University Writing Program invites the campus community to the awards ceremony this Thursday evening (Oct. 20, in person) for the undergraduate authors and cover artist whose work comprises Prized Writing, volume 33, a collection of 27 essays chosen from among hundreds of entries from across the disciplines. The book is available for purchase at UC Davis Stores, and copies will also be sold at the awards ceremony.
New cohorts will start in January; learn more at one of two information sessions: Oct. 18 and Nov. 19, remote.
