Quarter Begins With Caution
|
Week 2 of winter quarter began Monday (Jan. 10) with UC Davis allowing some in-person instruction through Jan. 28 while taking other steps to help slow the spread of COVID-19, like increased testing for students and working with Yolo County Public Health to hold a booster shot clinic next week.

‘LIVE’ Update on Pandemic

A new year begins with a familiar scene as a new variant of COVID-19 sweeps through the world population and causes a new wave of infections, as well as changes to our daily lives. UC Davis LIVE returns at 2 p.m. Friday (Jan. 14) with local public health experts answering questions about what’s next.

NSF CAREER Awards Aplenty
|
UC Davis’ academic foundation grew even stronger with a university record 19 assistant professors receiving National Science Foundation CAREER awards in the 2020-21 funding cycle. The number climbed to 21 when two faculty newcomers arrived with CAREER awards already in hand. And three awards have already come in for 2022.

New Call Stations Activated
|
UC Davis continues to enhance campus safety with additional blue-light emergency call stations. With eight more activated in December — in the Quad District and a little farther out — the campus now has 20 stations and one more on the way. See a map of all the sites, from the Arboretum Waterway to UC Davis West Village.

Campus Lighting Safety Walk — Originally scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 18, this annual event has been postponed while remote instruction continues through Jan. 28. Dateline will announce the new date when it is determined.

Annual asbestos notification — This notice is required by the California Health and Safety Code, notifying all employees of the presence of asbestos in campus buildings constructed prior to 1979.
|
UC Davis Library strategic planning — The campus community is invited to submit feedback on the library’s draft strategic plan for 2022-27. Deadline: Jan. 31.
|
Shields Avenue closure — Between A Street and West Quad Avenue, for Big Shift pipeline construction, through Feb. 28. Vehicle and bicycle traffic can use Hutchison Drive as a detour; the intersection of Shields and East Quad avenues will remain open for north-south bicycle traffic.

The UC Davis Global Tea Initiative’s seventh annual colloquium, “Tea and Beyond,” will feature scholarly presentations on such topics as tea and general health, anxiety and meditation; the use of teas by Indigenous and other ethnic populations; and nontea infusions that are often marketed as tea. This Thursday (Jan. 13), remote, free and open to the public.
Well-Being Ticket Deal for January: Staff and faculty have until Jan. 22 to purchase discounted tickets ($10 each, limit two per person) to see Circa’s Humans 2.0, 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28. The Mondavi Center advises this is a more mature performance, recommended for ages 8 and up.
