Grand Challenges Update: Initial Focus Areas Chosen
|
After a year of engagement with campus stakeholders, UC Davis' Grand Challenges initiative has identified its initial focus areas and is moving ahead quickly, facilitating transdisciplinary research collaboration and assisting in large-scale proposal development. The university has already received $1 million in federal funding for the Institute for Pandemic Intelligence.

Our Newest Top Ranking Reflects the Good We Do
|
Washington Monthly puts us in the No. 2 position among public universities in the United States and 11th among all national universities, based on criteria that include doing good and fostering social mobility. Elsewhere in the rankings, UC Davis is 16th among the Best Bang for the Buck Western Colleges and on the list for the Best Colleges for Student Voting.

9/11 Memorial Stair Climb
|
Our Police Department invites the community to UC Davis Health Stadium the morning of Sunday, Sept. 11, to honor the fallen first responders of the terrorist attacks of 21 years ago and support the 9/11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center in New York City. Register by this Friday (Sept. 2) to ensure you will get a commemorative T-shirt and lunch.

Commencement in August
|
Seeing her son stride onto the graduation stage at the University Credit Union Center was worth a second trip from Atlanta and the wait of a few extra weeks. “I wanted to hear his name called, to see him walk across the stage,” Donna Pearson said. And so she did, in the first of three makeup ceremonies for students who missed out when excessive heat cut the June ceremonies short.

Fall Welcome Calendar — Be sure your events are included! If you get them entered by Sept. 6, you will get the biggest advantage from the promotional push to students. See the instructions for calendar entries from Student Affairs units and non-Student Affairs units.

Call for volunteers for Aggie Orientation — Staff, faculty, students and community members are invited to be on hand to greet new students from Sept. 15 to 19. Shifts are generally no more than two to three hours long. Add your name to the sign-up sheet.

Help alleviate a critical shortage of blood — Two-day drive concludes Wednesday (Aug. 31), 10 a.m.-3 p.m., in bloodmobiles on the Quad, with appointments still available at the time Dateline was published. We open the season against our city cousins the Golden Bears, this Saturday (Sept. 3), in Berkeley, kickoff 1 p.m. The Cal Aggie Alumni Association is sponsoring a tailgate from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. — but take note: Tailgate ticket sales will end at 5 p.m. today (Aug. 30). The UC Davis Ticket Office is selling game tickets in the Aggies section of the stadium.
Come out to see field hockey, women’s and men’s soccer, volleyball and men’s water polo, Sept. 2-16, and the first home football game, 7 p.m. kickoff Sept. 17.
The Lumpkin-Boccuzzi Family Collection of Contemporary Art, through Dec. 19, Manetti Shrem Museum, open 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday, Thursday and Friday, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Free admission.
