|
Three days before Earth Day (April 22), environmental science writer Kat Kerlin and our video team present an extended feature on prescribed burns, and how state and local agencies and neighborhood burn associations are increasingly creating opportunities for landowners to become a bigger part of wildfire resilience efforts, by carefully burning their own property.

Unlock Give Day Challenges
|
Enthusiasm is high for the sixth annual Give Day, from noon Friday to 5 p.m. Saturday (Picnic Day), as donors have stepped up to offer some 230 challenge gifts worth more than $2.8 million, a new record, breaking the previous mark of $2.4 million set last year. Each challenge invites other contributions, and, once a specified number come in, the challenge gift is unlocked.

The recent spate of mass shootings, from Sacramento to New York and D.C., prompted a special UC Davis LIVE this morning, the recording of which is now available for on-demand viewing. Hear from two UC Davis faculty members: Garen Wintemute, a pioneer in the public health approach to violence prevention; and Amy Barnhorst, an expert in firearms law and mental illness.

Campus Construction Update
|
It can be hard to keep track of what’s being built and renovated around campus, but UC Davis Magazine makes it easy: This annotated map has brief descriptions and timelines for projects ranging from the new Edwards Family Athletics Center (scheduled to be complete this fall) to the Wyatt Deck makeover and the $500 million Veterinary Medical Center.

Traffic delay — At the intersection of La Rue/Anderson roads and Russell Boulevard, where a four-way stop was still in effect today (April 19) after a car crash damaged a signal Monday morning. The city was working as quickly as possible on a repair, a spokeswoman said. In the meantime, consider alternate routes.

Free e-waste drop-off event — 10-noon Wednesday, April 20, Hopkins Services Complex (west of Highway 113). For university-owned items only.

Small and Diverse Supplier Expo — 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday, April 25, remote. The event brings together university and hospital purchasers and local suppliers. Registration is required.

Blood drive — 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, April 25 and 26, bloodmobiles on the Quad. All appointments are full, but walk-ins may be accommodated if slots open up.

Sustainability Champion Awards — Call for nominations of students, staff and faculty/academic staff who are environmental leaders on campus, who exemplify why UC Davis continues to lead the way in sustainability efforts. Deadline: May 1.

Administrative advisory committees for 2022-23 — Call for applications for membership on committees addressing such topics as the arts, child and family care, diversity, student services, research, and transportation and parking services. Deadline: May 5.

Vice Chancellor-Finance, Operations and Administration — The last in-person public forum, for Candidate C, will be held from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. Thursday, April 21, in Ballroom A, Activities and Recreation Center (ARC). Videos of all three forums will be posted Friday (April 22).
