100,000 COVID-19 Tests So Far

The Genome Center reported Sunday (Jan. 3) that it had processed the 100,000th saliva sample in the university’s COVID-19 testing program that began 3½ months ago. The ARC testing kiosk reopened Sunday after winter break; employees accessing UC Davis facilities in Davis or elsewhere in Yolo County have until Jan. 7 to resume testing.

Notices of Potential Exposure

UC Davis this week begins notifying employees of possible exposure to COVID-19 at work, as required by a new state law. We’re sending notices whenever we determine that employees or students were at work sites during the regulation-defined infectious period. Biology Lab Kits Sent Home: Seeds, Soils and Microscope

How do you provide hands-on experience during remote instruction? For introductory biology last quarter, you assemble more than 2,000 lab packets — seeds, soils of varying nutrient levels, fungi-growing instructions and even a tiny microscope that can be attached to a smartphone to take pictures — and mail them to your students.

UC, Springer Implement Deal With Open Access as Default

Under the agreement announced in June, and effective Jan. 4, UC authors have an easier and more affordable way to have their articles made available via open access in Springer journals and academic journals on nature.com. The integration of Nature-branded journals into the agreement is expected in 2022.
