‘Real Breakthrough’ in Testing
|
UC Davis Health has created a new rapid COVID-19 test, under a sponsored research agreement with Maurice J. Gallagher Jr. and support from Shimadzu Scientific Instruments. Gallagher, chairman and CEO of Allegiant Travel Co., and benefactor of Gallagher Hall, home of the UC Davis Graduate School of Management, has launched a startup, SpectraPass, to develop the automated system into a means to facilitate reopening the economy.

High Honors for 8 Faculty
|
Newly elected to the National Academy of Sciences: Isabel P. Montañez (earth science), Monique Borgerhoff Mulder (anthropology) and Michael Turelli (evolution and ecology). And to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences: Robert Feenstra (economics), Jodi Nunnari (molecular and cellular biology), Andrés Reséndez (history) and Geerat Vermeij (paleobiology). Also, William Jackson (chemistry) receives the National Science Board's Public Service Award.

New Episode of ‘Face to Face’
|
Chancellor Gary S. May’s guest this month has the unlikely title of neuroscientist and children’s book author. Theanne Griffith, an assistant professor in the Department of Physiology and Membrane Biology, began writing after the birth of her first daughter. Three books are out in her Magnificent Makers series and two more are coming.

First-Year Aggie Connections — Faculty, staff and graduate students are invited to serve as facilitators of fall “connections,” or groups of up to 25 first-year Aggies. Each would-be facilitator is asked to propose a theme for their connection. Deadline: April 30.

Call for applications for 2021-22 administrative advisory committees — Members of all constituencies — Academic Senate and Academic Federation, staff, graduate students and undergraduate students — are eligible to participate in campus governance, on such topics as the arts, child and family care, diversity, student services, and research. Arboretum GATEways horticulturist Rachel Davis leads this virtual Nature Rx program, Saturday (April 30), introducing people to the iNaturalist app — a tool that allows you to be a scientist of the world, by way of the internet, sharing what you see in nature. Sponsored by the Arboretum and Public Garden and the Faculty and Staff Well-Being Program. Free.
