Saving a dying breedIsolated for more than a century off the Southern California coast, Santa Cruz Island horses are teetering on the brink of extinction, prompting UC Davis’ effort to preserve the breed’s special characteristics: affectionate and trusting, small yet hardy. “If we lose these genetics, we lose these horses, we lose that history and a part of our heritage,” says Amy McLean, a researcher and lecturer in the Department of Animal Science. Public health student earns trip to UC Grad Slam
And the campus winner is … Tooka Zokaki, who studies with Gerald Kayingo, an assistant clinical professor at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing.
