A scientific revolution, all because of basic research funding
UC news story and video tell the story of green fluorescent protein, or GFP, now used in studies of disease, including UC Davis research on HIV. - Call for nominations for Academic Senate awards — Faculty Distinguished Research Award (formerly the Faculty Research Lecture Award), deadline Dec. 1; Distinguished Scholarly Public Service Awards, deadline Dec. 8; and Distinguished Teaching Awards, deadline Dec. 20.
- Call for proposals for Seed Grants for International Activities — Faculty members are invited to apply for funding of $5,000 to $15,000 per proposal. The Office of Global Affairs encourages proposals that foster international research collaborations, create innovations in internationalizing the curriculum, and build new interdisciplinary, international partnerships. Deadline: Nov. 30.

Thursday concert: Selections from long-lost opera
History professor Sally McKee wrote a book about Edmond Dédé and his 1888 opera, Morgiane, or The Sultan of Ispahan, and now the Department of Music has transcribed some of the work’s arias for performance, in French, in this week’s Shinkoskey Noon Concert (Nov. 16). The composition is the oldest known complete opera score by an African American. [ More… ]
