UC Davis to host first gubernatorial debate

Republican Meg Whitman and Democrat Jerry Brown have agreed to participate in a live broadcast debate at UC Davis, scheduled for Sept. 28. The event is sponsored by Capital Public Radio, KCRA-TV Sacramento, The Sacramento Bee and UC Davis. It will be the first gubernatorial debate and one of only three planned before the Nov. 2 election. [ More… ]

Burtis to step down as biological sciences dean

Ken Burtis plans to return to teaching and research next year at the end of a six-year term as dean of the College of Biological Sciences. A first for Unitrans: Regular Sunday service

Unitrans launches its new schedule Aug. 2 with big news: regular service on Sundays for the first time in the history of the campus-city bus system. Also, the A line will provide more frequent service to downtown and the Amtrak station. This spring, Unitrans acquired two brand-new double-decker buses, and they will be back in service in the fall, primarily on the high-volume B and G lines. [ More… ]

City agrees to share fire chief with UC Davis

The Davis City Council has authorized staff to move forward with the first phase of the pilot project to consolidate fire services with the UC Davis Fire Department. Cow put down at fair; vet school to review animal handling procedures

The director of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital has called for a review of animal handling procedures in the wake of a cow's escape while being taken to the UC Davis-run livestock nursery at the state fair. Cal Expo police ended up putting the animal down, after officials declared that the cow threatened public safety. [ More… ]

Nursing school announces inaugural classes

The Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis selected 33 students to make up the inaugural Nursing Science and Health-Care Leadership Graduate classes. The first cohort comprises eight Doctor of Philosophy students and 25 Master of Science students. The doctoral program is the first doctoral nursing program in the inland Northern California and Central Valley regions. [ More… ]

Free community concert: Pop Fiction

Wednesday, Aug. 11, 6 p.m., lawn behind Shriners Hospital for Children, 45th and X streets

The UC Davis Health System will host the dance band Pop Fiction at its fourth annual free outdoor concert. The band plays dance favorites and pop classics from the '70s through today. This family-oriented, smoke-free event includes a kids zone, complete with games, a bounce house, crafts and other fun activities. [ More… ]

Only 1,000 tickets left for Aggies vs. Bears at Cal

Saturday, Sept. 4, 1 p.m., UC Berkeley

From its original supply of 5,000 tickets, Aggie athletics has about 1,000 left for the Sept. 4 football game between UC Davis and Cal — the first varsity matchup between the blue-and-gold cousins in 71 years. An Aggies pregame celebration, open to the public, is set to begin at 10 a.m. A package deal is also available: pregame celebration, game ticket and bus transportation. [ More… ]
