Chancellor and provost release budget planning letter
Chancellor Katehi and Provost Lavernia today released their budget planning letter for 2010-11, reflecting the third consecutive year of severe cuts — this time to address a shortfall of as much as $78 million, depending on what happens with the state budget. The letter also addresses the work of the campus's Budget Advisory Committees and ongoing efforts to improve administrative efficiencies. [ More… ]
Library to remain open as study hall this weekend
In a Feb. 4 message to the campus community, Chancellor Katehi and Provost Lavernia acknowledge "a shared concern" with the factors that precipitated this weekend's planned "study-in" at Shields Library. Therefore, Katehi and Lavernia announced extended hours to keep Shields open around the clock through midnight Sunday. [ More… ]
Groundwater cleanup at Superfund site
A chain of chemical reactions between organic waste and naturally occurring chromium appears to explain the long-standing elevated levels of the chemical chromium-6, a human carcinogen, in groundwater at a federal Superfund site on the southern edge of the UC Davis campus, according to university environmental professionals. Surveys ask employees, retirees about possible changes in post-employment benefits
The UC system's Post-Employment Benefits Task Force is asking employees and retirees to complete short, online surveys about possible changes in benefits, all part of the university's effort to make the benefits program financially sustainable. For now, the employee survey excludes represented employees. [ More… ]
Baby-bonding proposal allows use of sick leave
Proposed changes to UC's absence-from-work policy include a provision under which new parents could use up to 30 days of sick leave for the purpose of bonding with their babies. The university also is proposing an increase in how much sick leave you could use to care for a child, spouse, domestic partner or parent, and more bereavement leave for the death of a family or household member. The UC Davis Police Department last week recognized some heroic role reversals, including a protective service officer who delivered a baby in a hallway at the medical center and two registered nurses who helped an officer handcuff a suspect outside the center's emergency room. [ More… ]

Social media — including Twitter, Facebook and text messaging — are changing the practice of law with regard to sexual harassment, copyright infringement, privacy rights and many other issues, according to a panel of experts who gathered to discuss the subject at the School of Law Feb. 3. [ More… ]

Call for applications for membership on 2010-11 UC Davis Administrative Advisory Committees
Chancellor Katehi encourages all UC Davis community members to become involved in issues affecting the campus by applying for membership on a UC Davis Administrative Advisory Committee for the 2010-11 year. The committees address topics such as arts, athletics, child care, student services and research. Applications are due by March 8. [ More… ]

Nominations are sought for the sixth annual Calvin E. Handy Leadership Award, which recognizes an individual, group or organization that, through leadership actions, has made significant contributions in the area of public safety and security to the campus or medical center community.
