Furloughs to start Sept. 1, by order of regents
The UC Board of Regents yesterday approved systemwide furloughs, effective Sept. 1, as one part of President Mark G. Yudof's plan to offset an anticipated $813 million reduction in support from the state general fund. More than 108,000 full-time-equivalent positions out of a total of 135,000 are affected. Under the plan, UC faculty and staff will be required to take from 11 to 26 furlough days — amounting to a salary reduction of 4 percent to 10 percent — with higher earners taking more furlough days and steeper pay cuts. Cal Grant funding OK'd
An estimated 46,000 UC students who were awarded state-funded Cal Grants will receive their grants in fall 2009 despite the current state budget impasse. The university will use funds from short-term accounts to cover the estimated $125 million in Cal Grants for the fall term with the expectation that the state will reimburse the university once the Legislature and governor adopt a final state budget. Coffee buzz: CoHo moving to temporary quarters during renovation
The good news: An $8 million renovation and expansion, funded by a dedicated student fee, is about to begin at the ASUCD's Coffee House. The not-so-good news: The Coffee House is scheduled to shut down July 31 for just over a year, to allow for the construction. In the interim, the CoHo will be serving up a limited menu — including pizza, deli sandwiches, salads, tacos, coffee and baked goods — at several locations in the Memorial Union. [ More… ]
State Department taps geology prof as science adviser
Ken Verosub, a UC Davis distinguished professor of geology, is headed to Washington, D.C., for a year as a Jefferson science fellow, charged with educating and advising U.S. State Department officials and staff on a range of hot scientific and technical issues. [ More… ]
Dengue Fever next in SummerMusic
SummerMusic 2009 continues July 25 with indie rock band Dengue Fever and concludes Aug. 14 with a newly announced act, Zap Mama, led by "Afropean" vocalist and songwriter Marie Daulne. Fire hydrant group flow testing
Every year the Fire Department conducts individual and group flow tests of the approximately 220 fire hydrants on campus to confirm pressure and volume. This year's tests are scheduled to take place between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Aug. 3, 4 and 6, with Aug. 17, 18 and 20 as the alternate dates. [ More… ]
