SmartSite installs upgrade, as IET hands hosting to vendor

The SmartSite course management and project collaboration system is offline for a few days during its transition to a new computer host with the vendor rSmart. The transition began the evening of Dec. 17, and Information and Educational Technology expects that the system will be available to all faculty, students and staff on Dec. 21, in time for faculty to create their course sites for the winter quarter. Everyone's help needed to cut energy use over holidays

To save energy and money during the long holiday closure, Facilities Management plans to turn off or set back the heat in many campus buildings. Administrative and Resource Management is asking everyone to turn off computers and other equipment during the closure and has created a checklist that employees can follow to prepare their workstations for the holiday shutdown. Lunchtime downtown shuttle free again; holiday transit schedules

The U-DASH lunchtime shuttle between UC Davis and downtown Davis is free again, and two campus stops have been added. Unitrans, the campus-city bus service, and the UC Davis-UC Davis Medical Center shuttle are both scaling back service during the holiday period. [ More… ]

Change of scenery: Galleries, museums reveal winter wonders

Winter quarter brings a new slate of exhibitions to campus, some opening in early January. The Nelson Gallery will highlight recent acquisitions, including handworked prints by UC Davis art professor emeritus Wayne Thiebaud (Jan. 7 through March 7). The Design Museum will host From Our Land, an exhibition exploring the Nikkei (Japanese emigrants) and their role in California agriculture as well as their response to changing political climates (Jan. 11-March 7). Staff, faculty and the community can start signing up Jan. 5 for the Craft Center's winter quarter programs. … The C.N. Gorman Museum announced a Jan. 23 willow weaving workshop; sign-ups are set to begin Jan. 4. … Auditions are scheduled Jan. 4 for a UC Davis production of Anton Chekhov's The Seagull, to be directed by Katya Kamotskaia, winter quarter Granada artist in residence in the Department of Theatre and Dance. Davis apartment vacancy rate increases fourfold

The apartment vacancy rate in the city of Davis increased fourfold since last fall to 3.2 percent, while rental costs rose by an average of 1.05 percent, according to the 34th annual survey by the UC Davis Office of Student Housing. Last year, the apartment vacancy rate was 0.8 percent. [ More… ]

The outdoors: Volunteer opportunities at Stebbins Cold Canyon and the arboretum

Several spots remain for a guide training program at Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve over the course of three Saturdays: Jan. 9, 16 and 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The UC Davis Arboretum is also looking for volunteers and has scheduled a basic training session from 9 a.m. to noon on four successive Wednesdays, Jan. 20 and 27, and Feb. 3 and 10. Sunday, Dec. 20, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve (Winter Solstice: Renewal)

There are two guided hikes left in the fall-winter series sponsored by the UC Natural Reserve System. Animal Tracking had been postponed earlier and takes place at Lake Solano, near the town of Winters. On Sunday's winter solstice hike, people are invited to traverse Stebbins Cold Canyon on the shortest day of the year. Reservations are required. [ More… ]
