UC Davis rises in U.S. News & World Report rankings
The newest U.S. News & World Report best colleges rankings place UC Davis 11th among public universities, and 42nd among all universities. In both instances, UC Davis moved up in the rankings. [ More… ]
Annual Tahoe report: Asian clam invasion is growing fast
UC Davis' annual Lake Tahoe health report describes a spreading Asian clam population that could put sharp shells and rotting algae on the spectacular mountain lake's popular beaches, possibly aid an invasion of quagga and zebra mussels, and even affect lake clarity and ecology. [ More… ]

Andy Frank on the Chevy Volt: A move in the right direction
Last week GM unveiled the new Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid electric car, claiming it could get 230 mpg in typical use. UC Davis engineering professor Andy Frank, widely regarded as the "father of the plug-in hybrid," says that while the Volt is a move in the right direction, it meets only one of four minimum criteria that a new product needs to be successful. Scientist receives funding for schizophrenia research
The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation has selected Michael Minzenberg to receive a 2009 Clinical Scientist Development Award for his pioneering work in treating schizophrenia. A physician and assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, Minzenberg will receive foundation support of $135,000 per year for three years to help fund his research. [ More… ]
Children's Hospital endocrinologists featured on Discovery Channel series
UC Davis Children's Hospital endocrinologists Dennis Styne and Andrew Bremer will be featured on the Saturday, Aug. 22, episode of the Discovery Channel series Extreme Bodies. The doctors examine father and daughter Richmond and Ayanna Edwards, who are described as "familial giants," people who are genetically above average height. [ More… ]
Staff and faculty have first shot at Mondavi's single-event tickets
Single-event tickets for the 2009-10 season at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts go on sale this month — and UC Davis faculty and staff get first shot, starting Aug. 27, four days earlier than the general public. Staff and faculty receive a 10 percent discount on single-event tickets. [ More… ]
Staff-faculty ticket deal for Ags' football opener
The Athletic Department announced a new promotion, UC Davis Staff and Faculty Day With Aggie Football, offering a ticket discount for group seating. The inaugural Staff and Faculty Day is scheduled for Sept. 12, when UC Davis hosts the University of Montana in the Aggies' home opener. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Aggie Stadium. [ More… ]
Campus wall calendars available from bookstore
The UC Davis Bookstore is once again handling sales of campus wall calendars. The 2009-10 calendars should be available by Aug. 30, and preorders for the folded version are being taken now. Single calendars will sell for 80 cents each plus tax at all bookstores on the Davis and Sacramento campuses. Departments will receive a 10 percent discount, bringing their cost per calendar to 72 cents plus tax. [ More… ]

UC Davis alumna Stacey White is showing new paintings, oil on wood, in an exhibition at the Craft Center Gallery in the south Silo. A closing reception is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 4.
