Bee haven eyed for campus

Honeybees will soon find a pollinator paradise at UC Davis, thanks to Haagen-Dazs Ice Cream. Haagen-Dazs has announced that it is making a $125,000 donation to the UC Davis Department of Entomology to launch a nationwide design competition to create a one-half acre Honey Bee Haven garden at the Harry H. Laidlaw Jr. Honey Bee Research Facility at UC Davis. [ More… ]

Book project author says goodness is hard to write about

Tracy Kidder visited campus for a forum, a writing workshop and an evening lecture, all about physician Paul Farmer and his tireless efforts to improve global health, as described in Kidder's book Mountains Beyond Mountains. "(Farmer) forces us to think about problems we'd rather not think about," Kidder told an audience of nearly 1,300 in the Mondavi Center's Jackson Hall. [ More… ]

In a mixed-media exhibition at the C.N. Gorman Museum, American Indian artist Gerald Clarke Jr. examines tract housing's effect on native communities of Southern California. At the Nelson Gallery, Dave Lane transforms old machinery into works that embody his vision of how the universe is organized. These are two of the campus's new exhibits for winter quarter. [ More… ]

MLK scholarships: UC Davis hosts awards dinner for the first time

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Fund, which offers $500 grants to Sacramento-area high school seniors, has scheduled its annual awards dinner for Jan. 15 at UC Davis. The date would have been King's 80th birthday. The Office of Campus Community Relations is co-sponsoring the dinner, which is being held at the university for the first time since the event's inception in 2004. [ More… ]

Big birds to see the light in 2009

A program to discourage egrets and herons from nesting in the campus's Shields Oak Grove will continue next year with a bit more flash. When the first black-crowned night-herons arrive in March, they will be greeted with disturbing but harmless distress calls and laser lights. The nesting birds have become a serious threat to the oak trees' health, largely because of the toxic qualities of the birds' excrement. [ More… ]

Aggie astronaut tapped for fourth shuttle mission

Astronaut and UC Davis alumnus Steve Robinson will make his fourth flight on the space shuttle next December, NASA has announced. Robinson has a bachelor's degree in mechanical and aeronautical engineering from UC Davis and has previously spoken on campus about his spaceflight experience. [ More… ]

Holiday shows in Jackson Hall

Dec. 13, 14, 20 and 21, Jackson Hall, Mondavi Center

A Christmas-themed flamenco show and American Bach Soloists' presentation of Handel's Messiah are coming to the Mondavi Center as part of its 2008-09 presenting season.
