 VERT to the rescueThis is Molly, a 1,200-pound Brahman cow, stuck in an old mine shaft in Tuolumne County. The 9-year-old cow escaped major injury when she tumbled into the 30-foot-deep hole, but she was stuck there for three days until the UC Davis Veterinary Emergency Response Team arrived. "I'd say this was the hardest (rescue) I've done, and I've been doing it a long time," says VERT leader John Madigan, a professor who helped develop the sling — the UC Davis Large Animal Lift — that the team used to rescue Molly. 'Huck' and 'Tom' float old dock to removal
The arboretum waterway may not have much in common with the Mississippi River, but don't tell that to two staff members who got to play Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer earlier this month, poling their way down the channel. Cliff Contreras and Matt Hayes rode atop an old boat dock that had become rickety and dangerous, and had to be removed. Archive photos show sailboats that used to launch off the dock.
