 Putting an 'H' in 'wheekend'We've got Homecoming and Harvest and Heliotropium curassavicum, commonly known as salt heliotrope, one of dozens of beauties you'll find at the arboretum's first plant sale of the fall season. Homecoming activities include the 102nd annual Pajamarino, Friday night (Oct. 10) at the train station, and, of course, the Saturday football game: Aggies vs. Montana State, 4 p.m. kickoff (preceded by Wine Tasting with the Aggies). The plant sale runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, and Harvest: A Gathering of Food, Wine, Beer and the Arts rounds out the weekend, starting at 1 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 12). [ More… ] |

Year's gift total: $165.7 million
Donors committed $165.7 million to UC Davis during the 2013-14 fiscal year, surpassing the previous year's total of $149.1 million and marking the eighth consecutive year that philanthropic gifts and pledges to UC Davis have exceeded $100 million. The 2013-14 total reflects the best year ever for student support, and includes gifts to the multiyear, $1 billion Campaign for UC Davis that ended successfully on May 31 with more than $1.13 billion raised from nearly 110,000 donors. Mental health research center coming to Sacramento campus
The UC Davis Health System and state Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg announce the founding of a unique academic research center designed to improve mental health in California and serve as a national model for advancing innovative research in neuroscience, as well as the prevention of and early interventions in mental illness. FOOD DAYS: Panel, food drive, farmers market and more
UC Davis observes World Food Day (Oct. 16) with a panel discussion on keeping the world's population healthy and fed. The student-run Pantry does its part by holding a campus food drive starting Oct. 13. Also, the UC Davis Farmers Market returns Oct. 8 for the fall quarter, and Dining Services holds its annual Farm-to-Fork Dinner, Oct. 23, in three dining commons, open to everyone. [ More… ]

Faculty and staff: Look for new, improved myucdavis on Oct. 15
After 14 years, myucdavis for faculty and staff is getting a major face lift, giving users new features and an overall enhanced experience. The upgrade follows similar improvements to myucdavis for students. Myucdavis consolidates several UC Davis Web applications and online services into one location. The Web address is the same — my.ucdavis.edu — but, for faculty and staff, the look will be entirely new on Oct. 15. [ More… ]

The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning presents this event on Oct. 17, celebrating the work of innovative faculty who designed or taught online and hybrid courses during the 2013-14 academic year. BOOK PROJECT: Thinking about disability
Temple Grandin's Thinking in Pictures: My Life with Autism is giving everyone at UC Davis something to think about this year — disability and disability issues — in the 2014-15 Campus Community Book Project. The book project includes lectures, panel discussions, films and other events — on autism and the UC Davis MIND Institute (a leader in autism research) and many other topics, including ADHD and ADD, Down syndrome, special education placement, fashion for women who use wheeled chairs and wheelchairs, and even disability in comics.
