Memorial Day addition

UC Davis' Memorial Day ceremony, Thursday, May 22, will include a special tribute to Army surgeon Mark D. Taylor '86, whose name is being added to the Golden Memory Book, telling the stories of 135 Aggies who died in military service, from World War I and World War II, to Korea and Vietnam, and, now, with Taylor, to the Iraq War. He died 10 years ago this year in Fallujah, at age 41. [ More, with slideshow… ]

Speakers announced for spring commencements

Spring commencements begin this Friday (May 16) with the School of Law, where former state Assembly Speaker John Pérez will be the guest speaker. The speakers lineup for other commencements, May 29-June 15, includes alumna Helene Dillard, dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; Charlie Hess, a former dean of CA&ES; and Faith Fitzgerald, professor of internal medicine. Kaiser to lead HArCS on interim basis

Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi has named an interim dean of the Division of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies, effective July 1: Susan Kaiser, professor and director of Women and Gender Studies, and professor and master adviser in textiles and clothing. Kaiser joined UC Davis in 1980, and over the years her interdisciplinary approach to scholarship has enabled her to foster bridges across the campus. She spearheaded the establishment of the Science and Society Program and co-founded the Cultural Studies Graduate Group. [ More… ]

Cultivating tomorrow's leaders today

The UC Davis Administrative Officers for the Future program celebrated a graduating class of Davis campus and UC Davis Health System employees last month. UC Davis' official colors are blue and gold, but the campus is receiving more and more recognition these days for its many shades of green — as in sustainability, for everything from bicycling to building design, and in upgrades to existing buildings. FIX 50: Eastbound work still on schedule

As the contractor winds up work in the eastbound direction (due to be completed by May 21), Yolobus is scaling back extra service during the repair project in central Sacramento. One extra bus made its last run last Friday (May 9), and all other added service will be discontinued after this Friday (May 16). Also, the Yolo County Transportation District will cap its sales of discount train tickets at 3,000. [ More… ]

Katehi to join Gov. Brown at climate change forum

Gov. Jerry Brown and Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi will address a Sacramento forum on the potential impacts of climate change on the California rural economy. Amat Escalante (whose work on HELI earned him the best director prize at the 2013 Cannes film festival) will be on hand for the question-and-answer session, and the program also will include a showing of The Making of HELI, by Martin Escalante, the director's brother. Emma Thorne-Christy, this year's lone candidate for an M.F.A. in design, is going with a pop-up exhibition to show her work, titled Filed Away: the undocumented experience, starting this Thursday (May 15). Eight M.F.A. candidates in studio art will show their work at the Nelson Gallery, in an exhibition titled For Future Reference, May 31-June 21. First-year M.F.A. students have a show called Dumpstir Dive, which opened last week at the Pence Gallery in downtown Davis. [ More… ]
