Mellon Foundation is back with $1.7 million for humanities research
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation is renewing its support of humanities research at UC Davis, this time with a grant of $1.725 million. Three years ago the foundation gave just under $1.5 million that the university used to underwrite four new initiatives. The new grant will underwrite four more, two of them starting this year: one focusing on early modern studies and the other on environmental humanities. [ More… ]
Strawberry fields forever: UC Davis, commission working things out
There was a time when California's strawberry season lasted for just a few brief, delicious weeks in May and then disappeared as the summer heat rolled in. Today, thanks to more than six decades of research by three generations of UC Davis breeders, fresh strawberries are being harvested somewhere in California every month of the year, and the state is the dominant producer of both fresh and processed strawberries, providing more than 80 percent of the strawberries consumed in North America. Childhood obesity drops with new school nutrition program, study shows
The percentage of overweight or obese children in test schools dropped from 56 percent to 38 percent over the course of a single school year, thanks to a new nutrition program developed and tested in Sacramento and Stanislaus county classrooms by researchers in the Department of Nutrition. SF Exploratorium to showcase UC Davis' scientific innovations
UC Davis and the Exploratorium in San Francisco have formally partnered to incorporate the latest scientific innovations into the museum's exhibits and programs. The partnership will encompass a broad cross section of research topics, such as environmental science, sustainable energy, data visualization, coastal and marine sciences, and sustainable agriculture and food science. Be a scientist with Cooperative Extension on Thursday
Everyone is invited to be a scientist on Thursday (May 8) in cooperation with UC Cooperative Extension on the occasion of its centennial year. "UC Cooperative Extension is all about science and service," said Barbara Allen-Diaz, UC vice president for Agriculture and Natural Resources, which administers Cooperative Extension in California. Data on pollinators, water and food will be collected online, in an interactive way — with participants asked to mark their data collection points on a map, and add photos. [ More… ]
'Talk, think, learn' on Global Accessibility Awareness Day
The Electronic Accessibility Committee invites everyone in the campus community to attend an afternoon program next week to learn about technologies and initiatives relevant to accessible instruction as well as electronic information at UC Davis. FIX 50: On the outside and speeding to completion, eastbound
The U.S. Highway 50 repair project, eastbound, has moved to the outside lanes and is "on schedule" to completion, perhaps as early as May 16. With the switchover from inside to outside, Caltrans has had to close the connector ramps to state Highway 99 south and Business 80 east. [ More… ]
