Gowns go blue and green

Graduation gowns have turned from black to blue and gone green. The blue comes with gold trim (and the "UC Davis" logo on baccalaureate gowns). Our campus grieves with another for lives lost

We sat and stood on the Quad, around 2,000 of us, holding candles and listening intently as the UC Santa Barbara victims' names rang out. Students heard the names of fellow UC students, sorority sisters and high school classmates. Faculty and staff heard the names of students just like the ones we work with every day. We all heard the names of our UC family members, struck down on that tragic night in Isla Vista, May 23. [ More, with video… ]

California brown pelicans' breeding rates dismal

In areas that typically host hundreds or thousands of nesting pairs, surveyors find only a few hundred at most, and in some cases zero nesting pairs. "That's what we call a failure, a bust," says wildlife biologist Dan Anderson, a professor emeritus, who has been monitoring the pelicans for the past 46 years. "The bottom dropped out." The low nesting rates this spring could indicate that an El Niño event could occur sooner than expected, or that other factors are imperiling the once-endangered species. [ More… ]

He isn't doing it because of Fix 50 (although he'll beat the traffic, for sure). He isn't doing it simply for the exercise (although he'll get plenty). Scott Yates of Human Resources is running 20 miles from the Sacramento campus HR office to the Davis campus HR office to show how they are closer together than people may realize and connected under the new banner "One HR Community," inspired by One UC Davis.
