 Our fifth Wolf Prize winnerPrestigious award recognizes wheat geneticist Jorge Dubcovsky for his work in improving the world's most important source of food grain for people. By identifying and cloning certain genes, he's made wheat more nutritious and developed hardier varieties, now available around the world. Forum this week on faculty Hiring Investment Program

Meet our new graduate diversity officers
UC Davis has launched a two-pronged effort to recruit more graduate students from diverse backgrounds and ensure those students successfully complete their degrees. We've hired Josephine Moreno '84 and Steve Lee as graduate diversity officers, and we've set up a series of Diversity Dialogues (the first one is Jan. 28) to help understand the needs of graduate students, including students of color, international students, undocumented students, women in STEM and students with disabilities. Police Accountability Board to launch by spring quarter
UC Davis will have a Police Accountability Board in place by the start of the spring quarter, as a two-year pilot project. Administrators have been working on the project for more than a year, bringing in a top national consultant, and conducting forums on the Davis and Sacramento campuses, to shape what is likely to be the first civilian oversight board for a university police department in the United States. Oyster study shows threat of multiple stressors on ecosystems
The once-booming, now struggling Olympia oyster native to the West Coast could face a double threat from ocean acidification and invasive predators, according to new research from the Bodega Marine Laboratory. "At some point, multiple stressors will cause natural systems to break down," says Eric Sanford, professor of evolution and ecology, and first author on the study. [ More… ]
Finding the 'heat' and a lot more in peppers
A new reference genome, the work of UC Davis scientists and others on an international team, sheds light on the biology of the hot pepper's hallmark pungency, or spiciness, as well as its fruit-ripening and disease-resistance mechanisms. The American Nurses Credentialing Center has granted "Magnet Recognition" status to the UC Davis Medical Center for its quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practices, becoming the first hospital in Sacramento to achieve the designation.
