 UC Davis Wears Red DayChancellor Linda P.B. Katehi prefers the color blue on Aggie Pride Fridays, but on Feb. 7 she's switching to red to promote heart health. She won't be alone. We'll have red T-shirts and we'll try to beat the Guinness World Record for the largest number of people in a heart formation. We'll have a Battle Heart Disease Fair. Governor's budget precludes tuition increase in 2014-15
Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi says Jerry Brown's proposals — which would prevent a tuition increase and provide first-year funding for the Middle Class Scholarship program — "are powerful statements to California's students and their families about the importance of higher education in our state." Provost proposes new investment in graduate student education
Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Ralph J. Hexter is proposing a major new investment in graduate student education, by having the central campus cover the cost of nonresident supplemental tuition for certain Ph.D. students. This would save departments and graduate groups about $2 million a year, money they could use for other purposes. All of this is part of a proposed incentive-based budget model for graduate tuition allocation; comments are being sought through Jan. 24. [ More… ]
UC Davis-Madrid partnership presents first research workshop
UC Davis faculty and staff recently joined Spanish business leaders and researchers for a workshop on renewable energy, the first "showcase" of the kind envisioned by the university and the Madrid regional government in an agreement signed by Provost Hexter in mid-2013. [ More… ]
Econ prof crafts Thrive Index for poverty report
Amid Maria Shriver's new report on poverty among women, you will find the Thrive Index, the work of UC Davis economics professor Ann Huff Stevens and MBA students in the Graduate School of Management. 'Women Feeding the World: Farmers, Mothers and CEOs'
One photo shows a "seaweed mama" hip-deep in the coastal waters of Tanzania. Another shows a woman tending a small farm plot on a steep hillside in Guatemala. Another shows a female worker in a banana packing shed in Costa Rica. These are "women feeding the world" — the topic for a gallery and panel discussion next Tuesday (Jan. 21), inspired by this year's Campus Community Book Project, Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. Wildfire smoke linked to reduced immune system function
UC Davis research shows for the first time the long-term health consequences in animals after they breathe high levels of fine particulate pollution. The animals in this case are monkeys at the California National Primate Research Center, newborns when they breathed the same smoky air that all of us breathed during a spate of wildfires in 2008. Follow-up testing on the monkeys found reduced immune system functions, and a link between that and lung function, particularly in female animals." [ More… ]

A study by law professor Donna Shestowsky finds that people involved in civil lawsuits prefer mediation to nonbinding arbitration and prefer judge trials more than jury trials. [ More… ]
