 Gong sounds for museumThis is it, UC Davis! The ceremonial groundbreaking for the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday (March 1) at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, kitty-corner from the construction site at the campus's south entry. The public program includes art in action, plus the presentation of a massive gong as a new piece of public art for the campus. William T. Wiley, a founding member of the Department of Art, created Gong in 1986 — and he will be here to play it on Saturday. [ More… ] |

Chickpea research: Feeding the Future in Ethiopia
On behalf of the U.S. government's Feed the Future Initiative, UC Davis launches a five-year, $4 million research project to improve chickpea production in Ethiopia, where the legume is a crucial source of income, food security and nutrition to poor farmers, particularly women. [ More… ]
'Nurses can lead the charge to improve LGBT health care'
Bobbie Berkowitz, a nationally recognized expert in nurse leadership and health policy, urges her audience at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing to look past societal beliefs and popular culture when addressing health care for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Granada Artist-in-Residence Miles Anderson directs this adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel (celebrating its 75th anniversary this year) about tenant farmers who flee the Dust Bowl in pursuit of jobs, dignity and a future. Gunrock hits the trail on his centennial
Actually, it was the real Gunrock's centennial, the 100th anniversary of his birth, Feb. 19, 1914, the real Gunrock being the Army studhorse who spent 10 years at the University Farm, 1921-31, and who gave his name to today's UC Davis mascot. Check out his big day via social media. [ More… ]
