Water-rights allocations exceed state's supply
California has allocated five times more surface water than the state actually has, according to a UC analysis published today (Aug. 19) in the journal Environmental Research Letters. Ted Grantham, who explored the state's water-rights database as a postdoctoral researcher with the UC Davis Center for Watershed Sciences, says the time is ripe — during drought — to overhaul the state's policies. State of the Lake: High (tech) and dry at Tahoe
The Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences releases its State of the Lake report for 2014, explaining how drought, climate change, and other natural and human factors are driving changes at Lake Tahoe. Grants bridge gap between research and market
UC Davis gives four researchers a "step" up with $50,000 each from STAIR — a new, campus-based competitive grant program, Science Translation and Innovative Research, aimed at facilitating the conversion of technology generated from university research into commercial applications. … The Office of Research reports a near-doubling of commercial startups launched by UC Davis in the year that ended June 30 — up from eight the year before — "illustrating the huge potential of our faculty for driving economic development." Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles get another shot
"The Hydrogen Transition," a new study from the Institute of Transportation Studies, gives renewed hope for the successful commercialization of hydrogen-powered vehicles. "We seem to be tantalizingly close to the beginning of a hydrogen transition," says lead author Joan Ogden, professor of environmental science and policy, and the director of Sustainable Transportation Energy Pathways (NextSTEPS). Young migrants who come illegally to the United States to support families in their home countries face exploitation, poverty and marginalization, partly because they are not protected by law and lack parental guidance, according to a new policy brief from the Center for Poverty Research. [ More… ]
Gene mutation ID'd for heart disease in Newfoundland dogs
Veterinary cardiologist Joshua Stern leads a team in making the first identification of a gene mutation responsible for canine SAS, the most common inherited heart disease in dogs. The team made the discovery in the Newfoundland breed — massive, furry, black dogs with kind hearts that often are afflicted by the potentially lethal congenital disease, subvalvular aortic stenosis. Continuing students have four new majors to choose from — Global Disease Biology, Marine and Coastal Science, Mathematical Analytics and Operations Research, and Sustainable Environmental Design — and all of them will be open to prospective undergraduate students when they apply this November for admission in fall 2015. Also, the names of two majors have been changed and one major is being discontinued. And, when it's gone, UC Davis will have 102 majors total. [ More… ]
