The Mondavi Center's next season includes the U.S. premiere of iTMOi (In the Mind of Igor), a dance theater work exploring Stravinsky's creation of The Rite of Spring; first visits by the London Symphony and the Seoul Philharmonic; well-known names like Dr. John and David Sedaris; and the return of old friends Lang Lang and Itzhak Perlman. 'Be a Match' for postdoc with leukemia

Chao Wei Yu, who earned a B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. at UC Davis and who now does research here as a postdoctoral scholar, has acute myeloid leukemia — and a search is on for a donor whose stem cells could be used for transplant into Yu's bone marrow. Tissue samples — by way of a simple swab of the inside of the cheek — will be collected during next week's regularly scheduled, two-day Blood and Marrow Drive on the Quad, and the week after during a two-day collection run by the Asian American Donor Program. Option A (for Amtrak) just got cheaper for commuters looking to avoid Fix 50, scheduled to start in earnest in one week. Unitrans just got cheaper, too, as in free for everyone. Goldwater scholar's field 'really new, cutting-edge and cool'

UC Davis junior Andrew Magee, an animal biology major who studies "really new, cutting-edge, cool stuff" in statistical phylogenetics — estimates of the evolutionary relationships among species — has been named a Goldwater scholar, the nation's premier undergraduate award of its type in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. James Lucas, a third-year student transitioning from biotechnology to biochemistry, received honorable mention status. [ More… ]

KDVS at 50: Asking for quarters and more during annual fundraiser

"Watson! Come here! I need a quarter!" With those words, KDVS radio hit the airwaves (at 880 AM) for the first time, 50 years ago, broadcast from the now defunct Beckett Hall dorms. Many watts and many years later, KDVS 90.3 FM is once again running its annual fundraiser, to keep the station going. Native American Culture Days and UC Davis Powow

NACD programs through Friday include "Native American Cultural Perspectives on the Climate Crisis: Symptoms, Solutions and the Path Forward," "Yaqui Story Time," a hand drum-making workshop and the annual Native American Studies Graduate Student Symposium. The 42nd annual powwow, free and open to the public, is Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. (grand entry at noon) on the Quad. Drumming and dancing, plus more than 20 food and craft vendors. [ More… ]
