Pathologist featured in PBS documentary on chronic brain trauma
Mike Webster's death a decade ago still reverberates today, the result of an autopsy that revealed, for the first time, the devastating neurological disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy in an NFL player's brain. Last week, forensic pathologist Bennet Omalu, who made the discovery and has since joined the UC Davis faculty, appeared in the Frontline documentary "League of Denial: The NFL's Concussion Crisis." 'Land sickness' more likely as people live longer
As human life expectancy increases, so does the percentage of invasive and endangered birds and mammals, according to research from the Department of Wildlife, Fish and Conservation Biology. UC Davis joins cybersecurity research alliance
Computer scientists at UC Davis are taking part in a new research alliance with the Army Research Laboratory and four other universities aimed at detecting, modeling and responding to cyberattacks on networks in real time and in some cases without human intervention. The five-year funding for the core and enhanced program is $23.2 million, with an additional $25 million for an optional five-year extension. [ More… ]
Childhood injuries: Gunshots more severe, deadly and costly
A research team led by Oregon Health & Science University and UC Davis reveals that childhood gunshot injuries, while uncommon, are more severe, require more major surgery, have greater mortality and higher per-patient costs than any other mechanism for childhood injury — particularly among adolescent males.
