 Monumental achievementRobert Arneson's Bookhead knows something you don't know, something that will have all of us smiling — faculty, students and staff. The official announcement will come this Friday morning (Nov. 15), and you're invited to hear Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi deliver the good news. Listen for the Cal Aggie Marching Band-uh! at 9:45 a.m. at the center of the Quad, then follow the band down Centennial Walk to the north side of Shields Library. There, in a brief program (with cookies!) starting at 10 a.m., the chancellor will announce how we've achieved a huge milestone in UC Davis history. |

$28,000 worth of promises, including Bossy the Cow!
UC's Promise for Education campaign pays off with at least $28,000 for UC Davis scholarships. Now we get to see the promises fulfilled, by people like Rich Engel, assistant vice chancellor of Alumni Relations, who led the Aggie Fight Song at a recent football game — while dressed as Bossy the Cow (and we have video!). Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi will keep her promises, too: working at the CoHo for a day and throwing a VIP Greek Gala, after achieving her $10,000 goal (and then some). [ More, with video… ]
EAC is now called UC Davis Study Abroad
The purpose and destinations are the same: leaving UC Davis for a quarter, or a summer or a year, to study in other countries. Only now, students have a new starting point: UC Davis Study Abroad, the new name for the Education Abroad Center. The program also has a new website (and a new URL), with large feature photos and links to the myriad opportunities for overseas study: UC Davis' own Quarter Abroad and Summer Abroad programs; the UC system's Education Abroad Program; and independent programs. … The News Service has a new name, too. Geologist calls Chelyabinsk meteorite 'a wake-up call'
"If humanity does not want to go the way of the dinosaurs, we need to study an event like this in detail," says geologist Qing-zhu Yin, who did exactly that when he joined an international team in analyzing a meteor strike that occurred last February in Russia — the largest meteor strike in more than 100 years, one that injured 1,200 people, including some who sustained severe sunburn from the brightness of the meteor's explosion in the atmosphere. Autistic children far more likely to have tummy troubles
Children with autism experience gastrointestinal upsets such as constipation, diarrhea and sensitivity to foods six to eight times more often than do children who are developing typically, and those symptoms are related to behavioral problems, including social withdrawal, irritability and repetitive behaviors, a new study by researchers at the MIND Institute has found. LUX dark matter detector rules out some candidates
The Large Underground Xenon experiment, or LUX, developed with substantial input from UC Davis physicists, has produced its first data — proving the detector's sensitivity and ruling out some possible candidates for a dark matter particle. [ More… ]
Yellow ribbons herald special week for veterans
In honor of Veterans Day, yellow ribbons encircle every tree on the Quad in symbolic embrace of military men and women. The ribbons also herald more recognition of veterans all through the week, in presentations ("Honoring the Spirit of the Warrior," about brain injury rehabilitation neuroscience; and "Honoring All Who Served") and webinars; a reception; and, finally, a "Salute to Heroes" at the Aggie football game on Saturday (Nov. 16). WarnMe test set for Nov. 20; please update your contact info
UC Davis is scheduled to conduct a test of its WarnMe emergency alerting system — for providing timely information and instructions in emergencies — on Wednesday, Nov. 20. UC Davis emergency officials urge faculty, staff and students to check that their contact information, including personal email addresses and cell phone numbers, is registered with WarnMe and up to date.
