State budget is a done deal, with more money for UC
The governor's signature on Thursday boosts the university's base allocation by $142 million, or 5 percent, which means no increase in undergraduate tuition in 2013-14. Lawmakers also approved a multiyear funding plan that will boost UC's base budget by another 5 percent in 2014-15, and by 4 percent in each of the two years after that. [ More… ]
New Ph.D. Loreto Godoy dies of crash injuries
Two weeks ago they celebrated as new Ph.D.s: husband and wife Fernando Mardones and Loreto Godoy. Today, she is gone, fatally injured in a car crash June 21, a crash that also killed Mardones' parents. Mardones and the children, Agustina, 4, and Rafaela, 8 months, suffered various broken bones and are all home now in Davis. [ More… ]
More Frontiers: Internal grants for humanities, arts and social sciences
Vice Chancellor Harris Lewin announces the second round of internal funding for interdisciplinary research. First came RISE, for Research Initiatives in Science and Engineering. Now comes IFHA, for Interdisciplinary Frontiers in Humanities and Arts, in which seven projects in the humanities, arts and social sciences will share $3.6 million over three years. [ More… ]
UC Davis awarded $500,000 to improve STEM teaching

Study discounts risk to people from aerial spraying for mosquitoes
There's no immediate threat to people from the aerial spraying that targets mosquitoes, according to the first public health study of the potential risk. UC Davis and state researchers examined Sacramento-area emergency room data, collected during and immediately after spraying in 2004 and 2005, and found no increase in specific diagnoses considered most likely to be associated with pesticide exposure.
