ARM to be divided to better support the 2020 Initiative

The Davis campus’s Administrative and Resource Management is being divided to better support the 2020 Initiative, which could add up to 5,000 undergraduates. One unit will deal with finances and human resources, and the other with campus planning, facilities and safety. The reorganization also provides for better coordination of all of these functions, between the Davis and Sacramento campuses. [ More… ]

Chancellor Katehi to address STEM Solutions conference

She is going to Austin, Texas, for U.S. News & World Report’s STEM Solutions conference, where she will be on the panel “Bringing — and Keeping — Women In the Fold on Campus.” That is exactly what UC Davis is doing with a grant from the National Science Foundation’s ADVANCE program: $3.725 million awarded last year and running for five years to increase the participation of women, especially Latinas, in academic science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers. Honors review planned, with Kelman as associate vice provost

Ari Kelman, professor of American history, has been appointed to a new, one-year position in Undergraduate Education, as associate vice provost for honors programs. He’ll work with Carolyn de la Peña, interim vice provost, and the Academic Senate to review the programs and develop a clear vision for honors excellence that will serve as the foundation for future planning. Look at them now: West Sacramento college prep school’s first graduates

“The school, the staff and the faculty have clearly made a difference in these students’ lives,” Harold Levine said before commencement at West Sacramento Early College Prep Charter School — run by a partnership that includes the School of Education (led by Levine as dean). The 32 students, when they entered the school as seventh-graders, did not have much of a chance of graduating, statistically speaking, let alone move on to higher education. Hyundai Center of Excellence dedicated at College of Engineering

UC Davis and Hyundai this week dedicated the Hyundai Center of Excellence in Vehicle Dynamic Systems and Control, part of the College of Engineering. The center brings Hyundai engineers to the university to learn and carry out research, supports research by UC Davis graduate students, and gives undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to mix with the visiting professional engineers day to day. Kabang: Back home, where she is the ‘Pride of Zamboanga’

As expected, the hero dog’s return to the Philippines — after months of treatment at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital — generated a lot of news coverage. IET to roll out new email services and cloud-based storage

Information and Educational Technology says modern and flexible productivity tools are on the way for faculty and staff. Online storage services (Box.com and Google Drive) will help you create, edit, store and share materials without the hassle of USB drives or email attachments; and email, calendar and collaboration services will be available via Office 365 (by Microsoft) and DavisMail (by Google).
