Daisy relative and mangosteen: recipe for weight loss
A plant from the aster and daisy family, and a tropical fruit commonly known as mangosteen are the sources for an herbal supplement that helps with weight loss, according to a research team that includes UC Davis’ Judith Stern, distinguished professor of nutrition and internal medicine. “The results from our study are promising, and we did not see significant side effects with this supplement extract," she says. Stem cell research reveals potential new weapon against stroke
A study in Nature highlights the brain-protective powers of astrocytes, neural cells that transport key nutrients and form the blood-brain barrier. “Astrocytes are often considered just ‘housekeeping’ cells because of their supportive roles to neurons, but they’re actually much more sophisticated,” says senior study author Wenbin Deng, associate professor of biochemistry and molecular medicine. Lizards show evolution’s predictability
If you could hit the reset button on evolution and start over, would essentially the same species appear? Luke Mahler, a postdoctoral fellow, joins this long-running debate with a paper in Science. “Yes,” he says, we would likely see the same species, based on his study of Anole lizards that live on four neighboring islands: Cuba, Hispaniola (the countries of Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Jamaica and Puerto Rico.
