LED pioneer Woodall turns to energy and water

Professor Jerry Woodall, a pioneer in LEDs and lasers, and newly elected to the National Academy of Inventors, is now venturing into two of engineering's "grand challenges" — in energy and water. "I know how to make potable water remotely, generate energy and clean water and modernize a remote village," he says. An annual study from the Graduate School of Management notes incremental progress in women's representation in high-level business posts in California, and calculates higher revenue and profits for companies with the greatest gender diversity among executives and board members. [ More… ]

New 'Just in Case' app, for students struggling to cope

UC Davis has launched a smartphone app called "Just in Case," part of a larger effort to reduce the stigma students may feel seeking mental health services and to provide innovative suicide prevention services and resources. The app starts with seven simply worded choices, including: "I'm struggling to cope," "I'm worried about a friend" and "I might hurt myself" — and directs students to a plethora of resources, including telephone numbers (click one, and your phone will dial it). International fruit pest targeted by genomic research

The spotted wing drosophila, a major pest that targets berries and cherries and other fruits in the United States, Canada and Europe, is itself being targeted, thanks to groundbreaking genome sequencing at UC Davis and a public-access Web portal hosted at Oregon State University. The work is expected to accelerate basic and applied research, leading to better monitoring and control strategies for the pest. [ More… ]

'Transitioning to Retirement' workshop series starts Jan. 10

The workshop series "Transitioning to Retirement" is set to begin in January for academics and staff members who are within five years of retirement. "The best way to transition to a meaningful retirement is to plan for it in advance," the organizers said. Space is limited, therefore early registration is advised. ...
