World Food Center's first hire: Josette Lewis '88

The stars aligned for UC Davis and its first hire for the World Food Center. Josette Lewis grew up in Davis (her father worked on campus) and graduated from UC Davis in 1988. She had a 16-year career at the U.S. Agency for International Development, then joined a biotech company in her hometown. Baby formula may have health consequences

Formula-fed infants experience metabolic stress that could make them more susceptible than breast-fed infants to a wide range of health issues such as obesity, diabetes, liver problems and cardiovascular disease, according to researchers in the Department of Nutrition. [ More… ]

Medfly and other fruit flies entrenched in California, study concludes

Tropical fruit flies "are here to stay," says entomologist James Carey, co-author of a study clearly demonstrating that at least five and as many as nine species, including the infamous Medfly, are permanently established in California and inexorably spreading, despite more than 30 years of intervention and nearly 300 state-sponsored eradication programs. 'Lab on a chip' measures heart disease risk

Using a special microchip that can perform laboratory functions, a team of cardiologists and biomedical engineers from UC Davis has identified cells linked with inflammation and varying degrees of heart disease. "Our test provides a good indication of how atherosclerosis actually develops inside coronary arteries," said Scott Simon, professor of biomedical engineering and a study co-author. "This is an exciting step in developing personalized profiles for heart disease risk." [ More… ]

IN MEMORIAM: Sam Armistead, leading scholar of Spanish literature and language

Distinguished professor emeritus Samuel G. Armistead, 85, one of the world's leading scholars of Spanish literature and language, died of natural causes on Aug. 7 at his Davis home. His colleagues considered his work on the "romancero" (oral tradition and ballad), especially Sephardic folklore, to be one of his crowning achievements. Armistead clearly embraced the field: He was known for breaking out into medieval ballads in class. [ More… ]

UC Davis wins 3 Sautter IT innovation awards

UC Davis scored three of eight awards in this year's systemwide information technology competition, honoring innovation to make university operations more efficient and better serve faculty, staff, students and patients. The UC Davis Health System earned a golden award (for the Tethered Meta Registry) and a silver (for Privacy and Protected Health Information Surveillance Technologies), while the Davis campus's Information Technology Services received a silver (for Risk Assessment Determinations in Clinical Academic Laboratories, or RADiCAL).
