The Power of PerspectiveImage: TED logo

TED, or Technology, Education and Design, is the speakers' forum phenomenon that uses online channels to broadcast talks presented to live audiences. In May, the campus hosted TEDxUCDavis, which featured 11 presentations based on the theme, "The Power of Perspective." The presenters included UC Davis faculty and alumni, two dancers, the head of the UC Davis Health System, and other inspiring individuals from the area and across the country. [ More, with video… ]

12 assistant profs share $250,000 in Hellman grants

The UC Davis Hellman Fellowship Program, now in its fifth year, has awarded grants totaling almost $250,000 to 12 assistant professors. Funding comes from the San Francisco-based Hellman Family Foundation, which committed to providing $1.25 million to the campus over five years to support career advancement activities of promising assistant professors. Kabang, the hero dog from the Philippines, arrives at the vet school

Almost a year ago, a dog named Kabang lost her snout and upper jaw when she leapt in front of a motorcycle to save two little girls in the Philippines. This week, campus veterinary surgeons and students examined Kabang to assess what can be done to give the 2-year-old dog a better chance at a long and healthy life. [ More… ]

Scleral lenses benefit patients with corneal irregularities, severe dry eyes

A study by the UC Davis Eye Center has found that scleral lenses, which rest beyond the limits of the cornea and cover the white part of the eye, were a good alternative for patients with corneal abnormalities whose vision could not be corrected with other types of contact lenses or glasses. Former President Clinton visits campus

Former President Bill Clinton appeared at a campaign rally on behalf of four Democratic congressional candidates at UC Davis on Tuesday (Oct. 9). "It is really good to be back," Clinton said before a crowd of between 8,000 to 10,000 people on the Quad. "I love this campus, I love it every time I come. New app puts butterflies on your phone

Fluttering onto a smartphone near you soon, a field guide to the butterflies of Northern California, created by UC Davis students. The app includes photos and descriptions of 117 species, drawing on three decades of data compiled by Art Shapiro, professor of evolution and ecology. [ More… ]
