'Conflict minerals' disclosures will cost shareholders billions
A new federal rule announced Wednesday (Aug. 22) that requires companies to disclose their use of "conflict minerals" — those mined in the Republic of Congo and neighboring countries and linked to armed conflict and human rights abuses — will cost shareholders billions of dollars, predicts a study led by Paul Griffin, a professor in the Graduate School of Management. In memoriam: Simon Chan made breakthroughs in plant breeding
Simon Chan, an associate professor of plant biology whose work on plant breeding promised to help some of the world's poorest people, died Aug. 22. He was 38. "Simon was an incredible scientist, superb mentor and a great friend," said James Hildreth, dean of the College of Biological Sciences. [ More… ]
The Morrill Act: 150-year-old vision still paying dividends
The Sacramento Bee editorializes on the vision of the 37th Congress, which, even as the Civil War raged in 1862, passed legislation that led to the establishment of land-grant colleges such as the University of California (and a farm school that would become UC Davis). Campus builds 'new' Old Davis Road into the city
Construction began this week on the final piece of the "new" Old Davis Road, extending it all the way from the UC Davis campus to A Street. And, when that's done, by mid-November, the "old" Old Davis Road alongside the arboretum will be converted into a path for bicyclists and pedestrians. [ More, with slide show… ]
