Chemical common in antibacterial hand soaps may impair muscle function
Triclosan, an antibacterial chemical widely used in hand soaps and other personal-care products, hinders muscle contractions at a cellular level, slows swimming in fish and reduces muscular strength in mice, according to a study led by Isaac Pessah, professor and chair of the Department of Molecular Biosciences in the School of Veterinary Medicine. "A small galaxy of diverse research" — that's how plant biology professor Luca Comai describes UC Davis' relationship with the UC-run Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, as they begin a new era of collaboration. Comai, who maintains his lab in the UC Davis Genome Center, was among the researchers and administrators who joined their Lawrence Berkeley lab colleagues at an Aug. 9 signing ceremony for a memorandum of understanding. A team of investigators from UC Davis and Peking University has discovered a mechanism that may explain how alpha hydroxyl acids — the key ingredient in cosmetic chemical peels and wrinkle-reducing creams — work to enhance skin appearance.
