UC Davis submits two-year goals summary to President Yudof
In her annual submission of UC Davis' two-year goals summary to the UC president, Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi notes how "we are now beginning a broad-ranging planning effort to identify the best strategies to restore stability and vigor to the financial foundation of this extraordinary campus. Research funds surpass $684 million
UC Davis received more than $684 million in research funds in the fiscal year that ended June 30, compared with more than $678 million in the previous year. While federal research dollars fell slightly as "stimulus" funds tapered off, awards from nongovernmental organizations quadrupled, and state research funding grew by half. [ More… ]
UC Davis West Village ribbon-cutting and open house Oct. 15
UC Davis West Village, the largest planned zero net energy community in the United States, will hold an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate completion of the first 315 apartments, recreation center and village square. The celebration, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., will feature speakers, tours and a barbecue. All events are free and open to the public. [ More, with video… ]
Committee to advise on recruitment of new athletics director
As she announced the appointment of an advisory committee to help recruit a new director of athletics, Chancellor Katehi said UC Davis' Intercollegiate Athletics program is at a crossroads, and "whichever future direction we take — and whomever we choose to lead athletics in that direction — will help define the overall reputation of UC Davis as a world-class public research university." UC Davis gets $4 million grant to create poverty research center
UC Davis has received $4 million from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to establish a Center for Poverty Research — one of only three such centers nationwide designated to study the causes and effects of and policies aimed at addressing poverty in the United States. [ More… ]
Birders' delight: New checklist for arboretum's 159 species
Just in time for the fall migration, the Museum of Wildlife and Fish Biology is making available a free checklist for 159 species of birds known to frequent the arboretum. "This list summarizes all species observed on the UC Davis Arboretum since records have been taken starting in the 1960s," said Andy Engilis Jr., curator of the museum and the person behind the arboretum checklist effort.
