$5M commitment to establish new institute for innovation and entrepreneurship
UC Davis is launching a new interdisciplinary institute devoted to education, research and outreach in innovation and entrepreneurship, with the help of a $5 million commitment from alumni Mike and Renée Child. The Child Family Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, will help to integrate innovative and entrepreneurial thinking and actions across the university, and strengthen UC Davis' role as a vital player in catalyzing economic development in the region, state and beyond. Yudof outlines state funding needs for 2012-13
In preparing UC's 2012-13 budget, President Mark G. Yudof says the university needs additional state funding of $411 million, at a minimum, to preserve access for eligible Californians while maintaining academic excellence. As for tuition, Yudof says a midyear fee increase (2011-12) is off the table, and the regents will not take up 2012-13 fees until March. [ More… ]

Network of rice genes to speed development of biofuel crops
The first genome-scale model for predicting the functions of genes and gene networks in a grass species has been developed by an international team of researchers that includes a UC Davis rice geneticist. The new systems-level model of rice gene interactions, called RiceNet, is expected to help speed the development of new crops for the production of advanced biofuels, as well as help boost the production and improve the quality of one of the world's most important food staples. UC pays zero for Mondavi Center repair work
The construction you see at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, to fix the exterior waterproofing, is a big job. But UC's cost is zero, under the terms of a $7.1 million mediated settlement with the builder and others. The repair work is under way, with most of the performing arts center sheathed in white plastic. Inside, the center's 10th anniversary season goes on, unaffected. [ More… ]
