Budget: Up and down week for UC finances
UC Davis saw good news and bad news on the budget front this week. Good news: Gov. Jerry Brown, in his revised budget proposal, spared UC from a larger cut. This leaves the systemwide reduction at $500 million. Bad news: If Brown is not successful at extending certain tax increases, he will propose taking another $500 million from UC. More bad news: The UC Davis Mind Institute announced that it will lose all state general fund support for the institute's operations — nearly $2.9 million annually. [ More… ]
OP looks at centralized payroll and HR
The UC Office of the President is exploring the possibility of expanding a systemwide technology initiative — and the outcome could affect UC Davis' shared service center project. The expansion idea emerged from UCOP's Payroll Personnel System Initiative, aimed at replacement technology to be deployed around the UC system. Recently, UC Davis Vice Chancellor John Meyer said, he learned that the Office of the President is considering the merit of expanding the scope of the original initiative, to include the systemwide centralization of some payroll and HR transactional activities. Research coalition to study sustainable chicken housing
UC Davis and Michigan State University have received $6 million from the Coalition for Sustainable Egg Supply to support research on the sustainability of laying-hen housing in the United States. The first study of its kind, the three-year project will explore the interactions and tradeoffs among food safety, worker safety, environmental impact, hen health and welfare, and food affordability aspects of three housing systems. At the Mondavi: Return to Forever IV concert set for Sept. 21
Staff and faculty are getting a head start, through 6 p.m. today (May 20), on tickets for the "just added" Return to Forever IV concert at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. And remember, staff and faculty receive a 10 percent discount on single-event tickets. The much honored jazz-rock fusion ensemble is set to play at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, in Jackson Hall.
