Budget letter tells units how to cut, build revenue
Colleges, schools and administrative units today (May 6) received the numbers that go with the university's new budget strategy. Each unit has been given specific dollar amounts for reductions tied to efficiencies and cost-cutting, as well as estimated dollar amounts for revenue generation — all aimed at compensating for a fourth consecutive year of reduced state funding. President sends advocacy message to faculty, staff
UC President Mark G. Yudof addressed a state Senate committee today (May 6) on budget cuts to higher education. The hearing began at 10:15 a.m.; click here for the live webcast. Yesterday, in a letter about UC's advocacy efforts, Yudof said an all-cuts budget — proposed by Gov. Brown as an alternative to tax extensions — "would be devastating to the university and the students and communities we serve, and put at risk our faculty's research, a critical driver of future jobs and wealth in California." Former Kings player Jim Les to be named UC Davis men's basketball coach
Jim Les, who won more than 150 games at Bradley University and led the Braves to the 2006 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, will be named the head men's basketball coach at UC Davis and introduced at a press conference today (May 6). A webcast of the press conference is planned for 2 p.m. Les' NBA career included four seasons with the Sacramento Kings. His son, Tyler, will be a sophomore on the Aggie basketball team next season. Lots of possibilities for 'Innovation Hub'
We asked for ideas, and they came. UC Davis' request for concepts for an "Innovation Hub" to better connect the campus and the business community resulted in 43 submissions by the March 31 closing date. "The range of responses has provided the campus with a much more comprehensive view of possibilities with respect to technology transfer and generated new thinking about possible linkages," said Karl Mohr, assistant vice chancellor in Administrative and Resource Management. Faculty Research Lecture: Margaret Ferguson honored; other faculty awards
Awards season is here: The Academic Senate's highest honor, the Faculty Research Lecture Award, goes to Margaret Ferguson, a distinguished professor of English (she will give her lecture on May 27). Other awards from the senate and the Academic Federation are covered here. All of the senate and federation award recipients are due to come together May 11 for a joint reception. This year's Charles P. Nash Prize goes to geology professor Howard Day, for his commitment to shared governance, and to promoting faculty interests and welfare. Children conceived in winter have a greater risk of autism, study finds
A UC Davis study of more than 7 million birth records of children born in California during the 1990s and early 2000s has found a clear link between the month in which a child is conceived and the risk of that child later receiving a diagnosis of autism. [ More… ]

To make this research accessible to all, the campus presents on the Web a series of 49 educational posters that showcase projects, programs, technologies and accomplishments in three broad areas: energy, environmental sciences and stewardship, and sustainable food and agriculture.
